Ellen Degeneres, TV actress and later talk show host, came out as gay on her sitcom “Ellen” in 1997 on an episode entitled “The Puppy Episode.” She was the first lead TV character to come out during a time of mass discrimination against gay people. Therefore, she broke the barrier of the stigma surrounding being gay and paved the way for others in the gay community to come out as well.
